Textual Analysis of Paparazzi by Lady Gaga

Mise en scene
The costumes that Lady Gaga wears are very skimpy and very revealing which connotes
Her free spirit and uncaring nature as to what she's seen in. She has made her name by wearing outrageous costumes and so this is stereotypical of her nature. She craves the limelight. However this is contrasted by the struggle to get out of the paparazzi camera shot showing that they are intruding into her life and she doesn't want that. The video also covers all forms of media as there are several bank notes on the floor with Gaga's face on them which connotes that she has whatever she wants in life. Money comes easily to her. It also connotes that she is a very important icon to America and so means a lot to the country. There is a very luxurious atmosphere which is shown by the extravagant flowers and the marble fountain. This connotes her power and wealth as she is able to afford the most luxurious items. This is a stereotypical view on the celebrity lifestyle. This is contrasted by the chaos that ensues later in the video. The flash of light between each shot is a representation of a paparazzi camera which again reinforces how the paparazzi are very intrusive in a celebrity’s life. This is  backed up by the continuous flashes when Gaga is lying in a pool of her own blood which again connotes the paparazzi invading the celebrity’s lifestyle and will try to get their picture in whatever state they are in. The white lingerie she wears at the start connotes her innocence and purity which is then contrasted by the dark and leather costumes she wears later on which connotes evil and revenge, due to her boyfriend’s betrayal. The purple colour used throughout the video connotes a sense of royalty again reinforcing the stereotype that she is a very important part of America.
Sound
At the start of the clip there is a lot of diegetic sound used of the fountain's water running and the rustle of the wind. This creates a sense of realism and creates a realistic scene for the viewer. It creates a sense of calm and order. When the music starts playing at the start of the video it’s a very soft and quiet piano key tune which connotes a luxurious and romantic scenario. This is contrasted with the upbeat and robotic non-dietetic music of the main video which connotes chaos and anger due to the upbeat tempo and the constant change in notes and pitch.
Camera
Throughout the clip there are several close-ups of her and her boyfriend. This gives connotations of a paparazzi taking pictures and it creates a sense of intrusion into the life of a celebrity. The flashing lights and cameras connote a sense of chaos as they all clamour to get a photo of Lady Gaga.
The long shot used at the start of the video shows the grand white mansion which creates a luxurious setting which is a stereotypical view of celebrities as they are able to afford a very expensive and luxurious lifestyle.
Lady Gaga is always at the centre of the frame which connotes her importance to the story that is trying to be portrayed. When Gaga is pushed off the edge of the wall there is a low angle on the boyfriend which connotes his power and dominance.
Titling
The titles used at the start of the music video use a font that is associated with old fashioned Hollywood movies. This advertises that the production company that made it has a budget similar to the Hollywood production companies.
Narrative
There are two main narratives that are portrayed in the video. The first is the celebrity side of the paparazzi where they feel the paparazzi are an intrusion into their personal lives, and then the rest of the video gives a perspective from the paparazzi view which portrays them as a group of relentless fanatics who are huge fans of the artist who don't understand the boundaries that they are breaching.

This is a music from the pop genre, and by studying the generic conventions used in this video, I will be able to incorporate these conventions into a music video of my own in this genre.
